Only by being grateful to God, praying at all times, can we counter the complacency and smugness that comes with earthly success

34th Week in Ordinary Time : Saturday 29th November 2025

Dan 7:15-27; (Rs Ps) Dan 3:82-87; Lk 21:34-36 (Ps Wk II)

Complacency is the result of being too settled and comfortable in the known and the familiar, the quintessential “comfort zone” that one struggles to get out from and would choose, if possible to remain in it. But the worst thing about complacency is that it leads one to be too self-assured and presumptuous, taking life for granted.

This is the warning that Jesus gives to the disciples, who perhaps, were becoming somewhat complacent following the success of their missions, for the Lord had given them the power to cast out demons and heal the sick and they returned triumphant. Success in mission comes with the temptation to think that it can and will be repeated. More importantly, we may forget that it is God’s power working in our mission. When that happens, hearts “coarsened with debauchery and drunkenness and the cares of life” will soon result such that the day of the Lord will be forgotten and unanticipated.

As disciples of the Lord, let us pray never to rest on our laurels. For what God has achieved through us, give thanks and pray for the grace to be always grateful. Only by being grateful to God, praying at all times, can we counter the complacency and smugness that comes with earthly success.

PRAYER: Lord, I want to be watchful and praying at all times.
