Lord, may I always be ready to lead by serving others

2nd Week of Lent (B) : Wednesday 28th February 2024

Jer. 18:18-20; Ps. 30:5-6,14,15-16;
Mt. 20:17-28 (Ps. Wk. II)

In the first reading, we “hear” prophet Jeremiah crying out to God. He is angry that his enemies, who from persecuting him, are now plotting to kill him. He argues with God. He reminds God how he prayed for his enemies. Why does suffering have to be part of the life of the servant of God? The psalmist today echoes the sentiments of Jeremiah. He calls out to God to deliver him from his enemies.

In the Gospel, we “hear” Jesus predicting, for the third time, His passion and death. At this moment, the mother of James and John comes to Him with a request – to reserve places of prominence for her sons in the kingdom. Then, her sons make the same request. Jesus’ replies that while it is possible for Him to allow James and John to share in His “cup of suffering”, it is the prerogative of God the Father to reserve special seats in the kingdom.

While the disciples were arguing angrily, Jesus used the occasion to teach them about service to others as the way of leadership in community. Jesus compares the pattern of leadership of the world which tends to focus on power and His leadership which is grounded on His sacrificial death on the cross as a “ransom for many”. Those who serve others must follow Jesus’ example.

Lord, may I always be ready to lead by serving others.
