Lord, open my eyes and my heart to see things anew

Wednesday within Easter Octave : 3rd April 2024

Acts 3:1-10; Ps. 104:1-4,6-9;
Lk. 24:13-35 (Psalter Proper)

The crippled man lying by the Beautiful Gate was hoping for alms from Peter. He did not receive alms, but he certainly was not disappointed. Peter gave him what is so often lacking in our ‘charity’ – compassionate kindness. We probably will not be able to heal people as he did, but we can make a huge difference in the lives of others by kind words and actions. And who knows – maybe there will be a miracle or two.

The two disciples on the road to Emmaus were broken-hearted and crushed. Jesus was dead (so they thought) and the dreams of their movement seemed to be dashed. Perhaps we can empathise with them if we have faced crushing situations. But Jesus gave them hope – by explaining the Scriptures, He showed that this was part of God’s plan and that nothing had been lost. Their hearts burned within them as Jesus spoke of Himself. It was only at the sharing of a common meal that their eyes were opened, and they recognised him. It is in community and shared faith that our eyes, minds, and hearts are opened.

Lord, open my eyes and my heart to see things anew.
