Lord, help me to listen and hear Your voice, and live out Your desire for me

2nd Week of Advent (B) : Friday 15th December 2023

Is 48:17-19; Ps. 1:1-2,3,4 and 6;
Mt. 11:16-19 (Ps. Wk. II)

The word “obedience” has an interesting origin from Latin. The Latin word “obedire” does not mean blindly following commands; rather, it means “to listen”. Listening is not easy; it takes patience and trust.

Through the prophet Isaiah today, God expresses that if only the people of Israel had listened to the Lord’s teachings and lived according to God’s desires, they would have had peace and well-being (Is. 48:17-18). However, since the people did not listen, the unfortunate result was exile and suffering in Babylon.

Today’s Gospel is also about listening. God spoke to the people through John the Baptist, including his poverty and stern words. But, the people did not listen. Now, God is speaking through Jesus, including Jesus’ gentler way of engaging people, yet the people dismiss Him too.

These days, as we draw closer to Christmas, Scripture invites us to pause and listen. Advent is an opportunity to ask Jesus, “What is your desire for me and my life?”

The answer may take time to come. It may bring challenges, joy or both. We can trust deeply no matter what: listening to Jesus and accepting His invitation will bring blessings.

Lord, help me to listen. I want to hear Your voice and live out Your desire for me.
