Lord, may the light within me burn brightly
5th Week in Ordinary Time (Year A) : Sunday 5th February 2023

God is not impressed by piety and religious deeds when their purpose is to win His favour. He makes it clear that justice, kindness, and mercy are the only things that impress God. Without these qualities, nothing else matters. Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, help the poor and the stranger – all similar to Matthew 25.
He adds something important for our own time: get rid of the pointing finger and sharp words of accusation. Do away with all these things, and then bring your gift to the Lord.
According to Paul, Christ crucified – the ultimate sign of love and obedience to the divine will – is truly the wisdom of God. All earthly claims must be measured and judged against this standard of love and self-giving. Jesus proclaimed those who follow His path are truly “the light of the world and the salt of the earth”.
The light is what illuminates our hearts, minds, and souls. The salt is what preserves and purifies the world. These faithful followers – hopefully, all of us – have a sacred mission. We cannot remain silent and hidden, but must manifest the light in word, thought, and deed.
