St John Bosco, priest

4th Week in Ordinary Time (Year A) : Tuesday 31st January 2023

Heb. 12:1-4; Ps. 21:26b-27,28,30-32;
Mk. 5:21-43 (Ps. Wk. IV)

“Do not be afraid; just have faith.” Faith makes miracles.

Both situations described in today’s Gospel were hopeless from the human point of view. The daughter of Jairus had died. The suffering woman didn’t regain her health after twelve years and had no money left for doctors. However, at the time of their helplessness, their faith opened them to the power of God’s merciful love.

It is easy to claim that we trust God when everything goes smoothly. It is very difficult to trust in God when we experience the darkness of death and helplessness of injustice or the hopelessness of sickness. However, the only actual proof of our faith is when we can trust in God, completely and without any reservation, at the time of trial.

“Do not be afraid; just have faith,” Jesus tells us these words whenever we face something that seems impossible for us. There is only one way to strengthen our faith. We must keep our eyes fixed intently on Jesus and follow Him. He is our leader and perfecter of faith.

Lord, help me to leave behind every burden, especially sin, so that I may persevere in running the race of faith.

“I will fulfil my vows before those who fear the Lord.”
