Sunday of the Word of God

3rd Week in Ordinary Time (II) : Sunday 25th January 2026

Is 8:23-9:3; Ps 26 (27):1, 4, 13-14;
1 Cor 1:10-13, 17; Mt 4:12-23 (Ps Wk III)

David mourns with great sadness upon hearing the news of the death of Saul and his son, Jonathan, in battle. In spite of Saul persistently harming him,

Our first reading today emphasises God’s intervention in bringing desperate situations to joyful resolutions – in history and in our own lives. Thus, we are called to work together towards love and unity, each with a special task and special gifts but all contributing to the wellbeing of the whole, all living with the one life of Christ.

This theme of working together in unity towards the wellbeing of the whole is also shown in the Gospel reading through the calling of Simon Peter and his brother Andrew, and James, son of Zebedee and his brother John. They dropped everything that they were doing and followed Christ in His teaching and healing ministry. It offers a message of hope, transformation, and a call to share in the work of Christ.

Do we hear this message in our own lives today? How much attention do we actually pay to this message and instill it in our lives? Let us pray that God will help us to be united and to work further as His disciples in spreading this message of hope and love, always one in unity.

PRAYER:  Lord, give me the courage to work and to be united with You, in You and through You, now and always. Amen.
