ST AGNES, Virgin & Martyr, pray for us

2nd Week in Ordinary Time (II) : Wednesday 21st January 2026

1 Sam 17:32-33, 37, 40-51; Ps 143 (144):1-2,
9-10; Mk 3:1-6 (Ps Wk II)

The story of David and Goliath is an allegory which demonstrates that it is not always the proud and powerful who finally succeed in this world; that even a seemingly weaker individual can overcome the odds and defeat a much stronger opponent. This story has encouraged many an underdog faced with challenges seemingly beyond their strength to persevere and continue in the face of whatever opposes them. However, what distinguishes this story from those of many other cultures and civilizations, is that it is ultimately because of the favour which God shows to David that he is able to overcome his foe. While Saul refused to risk facing Goliath although he was the king and a powerful warrior himself, David, with the help of God, was able to defeat his enemy, a sign that he would ultimately replace Saul as king.

The lesson for us, of course, is that in our struggle as Christians to promote the Kingdom of God and its values in our world today, we can be confident that the Lord’s grace is with us. Each struggle we engage in for greater justice and peace in our world is one in which we can count on the Lord to be with us, and we can take courage in that fact. The struggle for justice is a long one. Let us take courage then in the power and presence of God’s spirit as we strive to promote the values of the Gospel.

PRAYER:  Lord God, I’m strong in You and with You at my side.
