ST FRANCIS DE SALES, Bishop & Doctor, pray for us

2nd Week in Ordinary Time (II) : Saturday 24th January 2026

2 Sam 1:1-4, 11-12, 17, 19, 23-27; Ps 79 (80):2-3,
5-7; Mk 3:20-21 (Ps Wk II)

David mourns with great sadness upon hearing the news of the death of Saul and his son, Jonathan, in battle. In spite of Saul persistently harming him, David believes that Saul has been anointed by the Lord to be the king, and therefore, he does not want to lift his hand against him. Now that the king is dead, he grieves over him. But David grieves even more for Jonathan whom he considers as his own brother, and his love more wonderful than that of a woman.

The death of a loved one can be very painful. We can seek the Lord to console us in our grief. We believe that the face of the Lord will shine upon the dead and they shall be saved, as echoed by the psalmist today. In our sadness, we look to the Lord for joy.

The relatives of Jesus were very concerned about His welfare, for He was too busy even to eat! They had to do something, that is, to take charge over Him. This shows their great love for Him. Do we also have people like these who care for us? If we do not have any, take note that the Lord cares for each and every one of us. Whether we are lonely or have enough companions, we can look to the Lord for consolation and strength.

PRAYER: Lord, my eternal companion, I turn to You for love, consolation and strength.
