2nd Week in Ordinary Time (II) : Monday 19th January 2026

The readings today challenge us to examine our obedience to God’s Will and how we live out our faith.

In the first reading, King Saul was reprimanded by the prophet Samuel for failing to follow God’s command completely. Saul attempted to justify his disobedience by claiming that he spared the best of the enemy’s wealth to offer as a sacrifice to God. But Samuel rebuked him sharply, reminding him that obedience is far more pleasing to God than any sacrifice. True worship begins with a heart that listens and submits to God’s Word.

In the Gospel, Jesus echoed this same truth when questioned about why His disciples did not fast like the Pharisees or the followers of John the Baptist. He explained that their time with Him — listening, learning, and growing in relationship — was more important than ritual fasting. His words about the new wine and old wineskins challenged their way of thinking about religious practices, inviting them to move beyond mere observance of the Law towards a deeper, living faith rooted in God’s Word.

Today, these readings remind us that the essence of true faith is found in a personal relationship with God and living in accordance with His Will. By constantly praying with the Word of God, we become true disciples, learning to listen to His voice, following His guidance, and living in accordance to His Will with humility and faithfulness.

PRAYER: O God, I come to do Your Will. Help me to obey Your Word and Your Will.
