St Margaret of Scotland and St Gertrude, virgin, pray for us

32nd Week in Ordinary Time : Thursday 16th November 2023

Wis. 7:22—8:1; Ps. 118:89,90,91,130,
135,175; Lk. 17:20-25 (Ps. Wk. IV)

Usually, when we go into a dark place, whether in a room or somewhere outside our house, switching on the light or our torch lets us see what is in the place. In a world that’s growing darker day by day, what will it be that will give us light?

Today’s first reading (Eulogy of Wisdom) tells us that Wisdom is ‘’ … a reflection of the eternal light … more splendid than the sun, she outshines all the constellations … ’’ (Wisdom 7:26, 29). And in Psalm 119, the Psalmist tells us that ‘’the unfolding of Your word gives Light’’ (Ps 119:130)?

Since the Word of God gives us Wisdom and Light, why do we not, in our everyday life, carve out time to know God’s Word through reading, meditating, and contemplating? Or is it, in our daily life, we’d rather repeatedly grope around in the darkness, bump our heads against the wall, and go down dark and dangerous ravines?

What do we know about the Word of God? The Psalmist tells us that ‘’Your word, O Lord, forever stands firm in the heavens’’ and ‘’Your truth lasts from age to age’’ (Ps 119:89,90). So, if and when we know God’s Word, it is like eternity entering into our lives, and it is like walking a sure and steady road in this life because we are walking in the path of God’s truth.

Lord, help us remain in You, the Word of God. Let us bear abundant fruit for Your Kingdom.
