We are called to love God, others and self.

3rd Week of Lent : Wednesday 15th March 2023

Deut. 4:1,5-9; Ps. 147:12-13,15-16,19-20;
Mt. 5:17-19 (Ps. Wk. III)

How do I view the law? Is it a heavy set of obligations? Is the law ancient and irrelevant? Does the law apply to my daily life?

Laws given by God to the people of Israel are described in the book of Deuteronomy. The first reading reveals something powerful: if people keep and live out the law, they will grow in wisdom and understanding. Keeping the law draws people closer to God.

How does Jesus view the law? In the Gospel, we see that Jesus greatly respects every part of it. Jesus has come not to abolish the law but to fulfil it.

In the verses that follow, Jesus guides us beyond the letter of the law to discover the deeper wisdom of the law. He provides vivid examples regarding murder, adultery and divorce. Then Jesus speaks about the heart and foundation of the law—love.

If we are to receive the wisdom and life of the law, we need to acknowledge its most profound meaning—a call to love God, others and self. In life, there are few things more relevant than love.

What law of the Bible do I most appreciate? Which law challenges me most?

Jesus, help me to see with Your eyes, to discover the wisdom of the law…and to act with love.
