Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart!

1st Sunday of Advent (A) : Friday 5th December 2025

Is 29:17-24; Ps 26 (27):1, 4, 13-14; Lk 10:13-16 (Ps Wk I)

The words of the responsorial psalm are rich in hope and trust in the Lord. In his cry to the Lord, the psalmist proclaims that the Lord is his light and his help, and asks whom shall he fear? His certainty is that he will see God’s goodness while still alive and so, he calls out to us: hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart.

Inspired by a similar hope, the two blind men who followed Jesus and proclaimed that Jesus could heal them were cured of their afflictions. Their faith in the healing power of Jesus was so strong that they were granted what they sought. So great was their amazement that, despite Jesus warning them, they could not help but share this news with everyone they met.

The supernatural miracle was a sign of the fulfilment of the prophecy made by Isaiah where there would come a day when the eyes of the blind would be able to see, and the ears of the deaf could hear. Contemplating this miracle, we ask ourselves: what is it we most long for from Jesus? Beyond the physical, do we desire the hope and faith of the two blind men which brought them to a new sight and new vistas?

PRAYER: Lord, may our faith and hope in You increase.
