33rd Week in Ordinary Time : Tuesday, 17th November 2020

Today we hear a letter to the Church in Laodicea. This city was wealthy; it minted coins and hosted its own medical school. Yet, in spite of this material wealth, people were spiritually poor. Just like coffee that is left out too long, the people became lukewarm. They felt little passion or need for God.

Surprisingly, however, Jesus does not abandon them. Jesus says, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” (Rev. 3:20)

Building on this image, today we hear of Zacchaeus. He has a reputation for being dishonest and cooperating with the enemy — the Romans. Surprisingly, however, Jesus says, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” (Lk. 19:5)

In each case, Jesus sees the imperfection of people and yet still chooses to draw closer. As strange as it may seem, Jesus truly desires to be with us. Though we have made many mistakes in life, Jesus invites us to come and eat with him today. The question is, do I accept his love and mercy? Will I let Jesus come closer?

  Lord, I open the door to you. Enter more deeply into my life. Give me the passion for loving You generously.
