5th Sunday in Ordinary Time (A)

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time (A) : Sunday 9th February 2020

Is. 58:7-10; Ps. 112(111):4-5,6-7,8,9;
1 Cor. 2:1-5; Mt. 5:13-16 (Ps Wk I)

We tell ourselves, and often advised by others, to let go of our concerns and grudges, and move on with life.

Today’s first reading and the Responsorial Psalm encourage us to care for others. We are challenged to do away with our yokes by helping others to live theirs and by sharing with them our possessions. Their wounds will quickly be healed, and we will walk humbly in the light and uprightness that are graces from God.

The New Testament readings take us deeper into this relationship that God has with us. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit that we attain knowledge of the mystery of God — God is the crucified Christ, who has shared our weakness and suffering.

Our affinity with the poor and the oppressed reflect on how we relate to the crucified Christ, and how we know God and known by God.

With this knowledge of God, we can function as the salt of the earth and the light of the world!

Lord Jesus, bring along with You our good works as You make Your offering to the Heavenly Father.
