Num. 20:1-13; Ps 94:1-2,6-7,8-9;
Mt. 16:13-23 (Ps Wk II)

Once again, the Israelites were complaining to Moses about the conditions in the wilderness. This time there was no water, so Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before God. God instructed Moses to take his staff and command the rock to yield water. But Moses went before the people and struck the rock twice. Water came gushing forth; however, God had told Moses to command the rock rather than strike the rock. God was angry with Moses for not crediting God with this miracle. Because of their disobedience, Moses and Aaron would not enter the promised land.

When Jesus asked his disciples who people said that Jesus was, Peter immediately responded with “the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Peter was correct, and Jesus declared that he would build his Church on Peter and give him great powers. After telling the disciples to tell no one, Jesus shared his future sufferings. Peter showed his lack of understanding when he refused to accept Jesus as a suffering Messiah. Jesus was angry with Peter for focusing on earthly things rather than divine things.

Lord, help me to focus on You.
