Lord, give me a humble and open heart

14th Sunday in Ordinary Time (A) : 5th July 2020

Zec. 9:9-10; Ps. 144:1-2,8-9,10-11,
13-14; Rom. 8:9,11-13; Mt. 11:25-30 (Ps Wk II)

The image of the king entering Jerusalem on the donkey was intended to give hope. Everything would be put right; justice would reign, and people would rejoice in abundance and peace (Cf. Zec (9:9-10).

The verses from Zechariah was used in the gospels to describe the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem. It should always give us a sense of hope and assurance that God is with us.

Living according to the flesh is living one’s life focused on self, the things of this world, and one’s success and happiness.

Living according to the Spirit is just the opposite: living focused on God, the happiness and well-being of others, and the common good.

How do we want to live?

God reveals himself to those whom he pleases, and often it is to those considered lowly in the eyes of the world. Humility and love open the doors of the heart and soul so that God can enter. We do not figure God or Jesus out, and we do not reason our way to God. Arrogance and pride have no place in God’s kingdom. Jesus invited others to approach him without fear because he was gentle and humble, so we should be the same.

Lord, give me a humble and open heart.
