Lord, help me to be totally committed to loving You

30th Week in Ordinary Time (C) : Saturday 29th October 2022

Phil. 1:18b-26; Ps. 41:2,3,5bcde;
Lk. 14:1,7-11 (Ps Wk II)

Although Paul wrote to the Philippians from prison, he rejoiced because of his deep faith in Christ and the faith of the Philippians. Paul recognised that his life was not his own – he lived for Christ Jesus and for the sake of the Gospel, but he would not be unhappy to die because then he would be able to live with Christ.

Paul would be content no matter what God called him to do because of his love for God and his gratitude for his own life in Christ. Can we detach ourselves from our own lives and give all to Christ?

Jesus had been invited to dinner at the home of one of the Pharisees. For the Pharisees, meals were not only important opportunities for fellowship but also for sharing wisdom. Jesus watched everyone coming in and choosing a place of honour close to the host. His advice was well-expressed as he told people to choose a less important place, and perhaps the host would move them closer. A person picking a seat of honour might be shamed by being moved to a lesser seat. Humility is the key.

Lord, help me to be totally committed to loving You.
