World Day of Migrants & Refugees

26th Sunday in Ordinary Time (C) : Sunday 25th September 2022

Am. 6:1a,4-7; Ps. 145:6c-7,8-9a,9bc-10;
1 Tim. 6:11-16; Lk. 16:19-31 (Ps Wk II)

Today the readings invite us to step back and look at the bigger picture: “Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called” (1 Tim. 6:12). What leads to eternal life?

Amos, a prophet of social justice, warned the Israelites: that feasting on the best foods and lazily lounging each day would not lead to good. Amos encouraged people to work honestly and care for people in need.

The Gospel describes heaven and hell more directly. The rich man in the story did not kill anyone; was it really fair that he went to hell?

The rich man’s selfish concern for only himself; his cold heart towards others led him to hell. Jesus invites us to have compassion for people who are     suffering. We are to act while there is still time— share with the people around us who are in need.

Yet, giving from our limited time and finances is risky; it may make us feel insecure. When we choose to help, however, we choose to love someone. We are doing what leads to eternal life. Instead of a gap, there is a relationship. Jesus makes it clear: helping even one person in need makes a big difference.

Lord, help me to notice someone in need. Give me the courage to help him or her.
