Lord, Grant me a listening heart that I may live decisively for Your kingdom values

23rd Week in Ordinary Time : Wednesday 7th September 2022

1 Cor. 7:25-31; Ps. 44:11-12,14-15,16-17;
Lk. 6:20-26 (Ps Wk III)

Wealth is a measure of success for the ambitious corporate worker, and an uncompromising belief in self-will is a coveted trait. We cultivate the best versions of ourselves externally to be accepted by our friends. However, Jesus upturns these ‘values’ we consider desirable and introduces us to the ‘beattitudes’ that demand a transformation from within. This conversion of heart and mind provides us with interior freedom to always live in His presence and do His will. How so? When Jesus blesses the poor and hungry, He is referring to the spiritual disposition of those who place their total reliance on God to provide for all their needs. When He blesses those despised and shunned for His sake, He compares them to the courageous prophets who were bearers of God’s truth and righteousness and were willing to suffer for His sake in making His Kingdom a present reality.

Jesus challenges us to choose between the world’s way, for instant gratification, or His way, for a blessed life. We can live for the impermanent things and pleasures of this world destined to perish or submit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, the true source of our joy. We cannot afford to be fence-sitters for the sake of our salvation. We must decide which side we want to be on.

‘Rejoice and be glad: your reward will be great in heaven.’ Grant me a listening heart that I may live decisively for Your kingdom values.
