Today we celebrate the Apostle James, son of Zebedee. He was the first Apostle to give his life in martyrdom for Jesus (Acts 12:1-2, approx. 44AD).
What do we know about James? He was the brother of John, son of Zebedee and a fisherman. James was particularly close to Jesus; for example, he was present at the Transfiguration and with Jesus during His suffering at Gethsemane. However, James was not perfect. In the Gospel today, we see his request for a place of honour.
Instead of getting angry at James for being selfish, Jesus takes the opportunity to teach James and also us. What is it that really leads to greatness? It is a humble service to our brothers and sisters. Jesus Himself lived in this way, giving Himself totally to others.
It took time, but James gradually came to understand this blessing and challenge. Indeed, we carry the death and life of Jesus within us, and it is something utterly powerful! Yes, “we carry Him in clay vessels, and we are fragile” (2 Cor. 4:7-10).
Helping others sometimes leads to suffering; it takes our time and energy. Yet Jesus is truly with us in these moments of sacrifice. We are weak, but He is strong. Such cooperation with Jesus is sacred – it leads to heaven.
Lord, I am fragile. Act through me today to share Your love. Amen.
