Daily Word Of God

Luke 9:57-62

As Jesus and his disciples travelled along they met a man on the road who said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ Jesus answered, ‘Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head.’

Another to whom he said, ‘Follow me,’ replied, ‘Let me go and bury my father first.’ But he answered, ‘Leave the dead to bury their dead; your duty is to go and spread the news of the kingdom of God.’

Another said, ‘I will follow you, sir, but first let me go and say good-bye to my people at home.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us clearly how He, as the Son of God, lives in poverty and “has nowhere to lay his head.”

  • If Jesus were to ask you to “follow Him”, what would be the most difficult possession to “let go and give up?” Would it be your financial wealth and position, your family, your comfort or any form of “security?”   Bring this to prayer.

  • Perhaps the Lord is asking you to have “fewer” commitments like, living a simpler life and sharing your wealth and time with the less fortunate of society who are starving and shivering to death daily. Reflect on Jesus’ great love for us by His dying for us on the cross.
