Daily Word Of God

Luke 9:7-9

Herod the tetrarch had heard about all that was going on; and he was puzzled, because some people were saying that John had risen from the dead, others that Elijah had reappeared, still others that one of the ancient prophets had come back to life.

But Herod said, ‘John? I beheaded him. So who is this I hear such reports about?’ And he was anxious to see him.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Herod’s conscience was tormenting him for beheading John, an innocent man who spoke the truth about his immoral living with Herodias, his brother’s wife.

  • Herod was trying to protect John’s life but eventually succumbed to the pressure of “saving his face” as he had promised to give Salome, Herodias’ daughter anything she asked, out of sheer impulse of the pleasure he drew from her dance.

  • God’s grace frees us from the tyranny of fear and shame and enables us to remain faithful to His Word and Truth. Do we compromise God’s Word, when we are tested like Herod, e.g. when we want to “safe face”?
