Matthew 11:28-30

Jesus exclaimed: ‘Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

‘Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.’

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

• A yoke on an oxen is a burden and yet Jesus tells His listeners that “His yoke is easy and His burden light”.

 

• Jesus’ yoke of love is easy because (i) true love of others springs from God’s love for us, and (ii) it is Jesus Himself Who shares the load with us.

 

• In this Gospel passage, Jesus mentions “rest” twice. He tells His listeners that they will find rest when they shoulder His yoke. May our souls find  true rest in God alone.
