Daily Word Of God

Matthew 18:1-5, 10-11

The disciples came to Jesus and said, ‘Who is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven?’ So he called a little child to him and set the child in front of them.

Then he said, ‘I tell you solemnly, unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. And so, the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

‘Anyone who welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me.
‘See that you never despise any of these little ones, for I tell you that their
angels in heaven are continually in the presence of my Father in heaven.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us that greatness in God’s kingdom is not measured by earthly rank or power; we need to have “child-like qualities” of trust, openness and simplicity of heart.

  • He warns us against the corruption of leading innocent children astray. So, as parents and guardians we must be good examples to our children and those under our care.

  • Are we imparting our faith and Gospel values to them?  It would also be good to teach our young ones to pray to their guardian angels that God has assigned to watch over and protect us from all evils.
