Daily Word Of God

Matthew 9:14-15

John’s disciples came to Jesus and said, ‘Why is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?’

Jesus replied, ‘Surely the bridegroom’s attendants cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is still with them? But the time will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • There is a “time and place” for fasting. Jesus does not expect us to “fast” all the time.

  • “Fasting” is not about food alone, but more importantly about our effort of self-sacrifice and self-denial for the sake of God. So, such deeds should be done in union with the suffering that Christ endured for the salvation of all peoples.

  • What would you find most difficult to “give up” that would help you grow in your relationship with your spouse, family, friends etc.? How can you “give up” these habitual ways and attitude during this Lent?
