2nd Week of Easter: Monday

2nd Week of Easter: Monday, 29th April 2019

Acts 4:23-31; Ps. 2: 1-3,4-6,7-9; John 3:1-8 (Ps Wk II)

The temple authorities released Peter and John because they didn’t know how to punish them without angering the people. When Peter and John went back and reported what had happened, everyone began to pray together. It is interesting to note how they prayed and what they prayed for. Remember that just a few weeks prior, Jesus had been crucified and then Peter and John had been arrested for speaking about Jesus. Yet the people were not filled with the desire for revenge, but they prayed for boldness in speaking God’s word and for God to continue healing. God responded by sending the Holy Spirit to each and empowering them with boldness.

Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews, recognized that Jesus came from God, but he was timid, so he came by night. He was afraid to make a public commitment.  Nicodemus didn’t understand what Jesus was trying to explain about experiencing the kingdom of God. Jesus was speaking about spiritual rebirth, but Nicodemus thought Jesus meant physical rebirth. For Jesus spiritual rebirth was essential. With the spirit one would have a new understanding of life. Still puzzled, Nicodemus left without understanding Jesus’ teaching. Are we like Nicodemus, interested in Jesus’ teachings but afraid to make a commitment to follow Christ? Or are we like those who prayed boldly with Peter and John and were empowered with the Holy Spirit?

Lord, help me to pray boldly.
