Jesus prays to the Father that His disciples may be “one like us.” Ever wonder what these three words mean?

Simply put, Jesus is referring to the oneness of the Divine Trinity (“us”). While distinct from each other, each person of the Holy Trinity – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit – is inextricably connected to the other. Furthermore, this oneness results when believers are true to God’s name. This means being obedient to the will of the Father.

Jesus attests to the Father that except for Judas Iscariot, all the disciples remained obedient to God by being obedient to Jesus who is the Word of God. Jesus pleads with the Father to protect His disciples, knowing full well the opposition and persecution that they will face once He is no longer with them. Being true to God is to belong to Him and belonging to God means that one does not belong to the world.

In our radical choosing of God over the world, we believers, embark on a life journey that will lead us back to God in heaven. Starting out as individuals, through faith in Jesus, we become a spiritual family that undergoes trials and persecution in the name of the Lord. By staying true to God despite these challenges, we will be rewarded with eternal union with God, thus becoming “one like us.”

Lord Jesus, Your prayer shaped us fittingly into the oneness of Your Father’s love and You, may we continue to be docile to such grace of oneness.
