Lord, help me to be open to the 'Word of God' and grow in knowledge of You

3rd Week in Ordinary Time (C) : Wednesday 29th January 2025

Heb 10:11-18; Ps 109:1-4
Mk 4:1-20 (Ps Wk III)

The parable of the sower appears as a simple tale of seeds growing, or not growing, depending on the type of soil they are sown in. The seed is the Word of God and the soil represents the hearts of people. But a deeper reflection makes us realize that the parable speaks of one’s daily disposition and generosity towards others on a moment to moment basis. A person can go through a single day manifesting all four modes of receptivity to the Word depending on the time of day and one’s interior disposition.

As an example. Waking up in the morning, before my morning coffee, I am in no frame of mind to be receptive to anything. Thus, anything I hear will not fully register. I am like the ground on the edge of the path. But once I get to work, I am all ears to receive everything that comes my way. For the Word of God comes in scriptural verses and also in conversations with others, verbal and non-verbal communication such as gestures. Whether I am the rich soil or the rocky or thorny ground depends on a variety of factors that have to do with myself. My receptivity to God’s Word will be coloured by my prejudices, likes and dislikes, idiosyncrasies. and positivity!

It is only with conscious intentionality that we can receive all with fruitfulness. We need to ask at the start of the day to be open to the Word of God.

Lord, may Your words increase my knowledge to grow in you.
