The Holy Guardian Angels, pray for us
26th Week in Ordinary Time (B) : Wednesday 2nd October 2024
Ex 23:20-23; Ps 90: 1-6, 10-11
Mt 18:1-5, 10 (Ps Wk II)
Today, Jesus says to us, “Unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” His words are not a mere invitation but also an assurance. There is no need to fear to become like little children, because as the psalmist sings today, “The Lord has commanded his angels to keep you in all your ways.” Hence, it’s an assertion to not be afraid of humility and to be of service to others. As the Lord of history has promised the people of Israel, even now the Father sends an angel before us to guard us as we go and to bring us to the place that God has prepared for us.
The road to humility is long and demanding. God is asking it of us, and God sends each of us our own guardian angel to accompany us to the end. St Jerome expresses it nicely: “How great the dignity of the soul, since each one has from his birth an angel commissioned to guard it.” Therefore, come to appreciate your guardian angel. It may not be easy for our guardian angel as each of us has our quirks and wants which are definitely not humble nor exemplary. Even so, be assured that our guardian angel will be with us to the end, whether to heaven or to the goal of achieving perfect humility.
Oh, my Guardian Angel dear,
I pray for humbleness clear.
Give me strength and holy grace,
Ending with God face to face.
