St. Vincent de Paul, Priest, pray for us

25th Week in Ordinary Time (B) : Friday 27th September 2024

Eccl 3:1-11; Ps 143:1-4;
Lk 9:18-22 (Ps Wk I)

The name of St. Vincent de Paul is synonymous with works of charity. But is charity all there is to this saint? Out of his many quotes, this particular one is striking – “If God is the centre of your life, no words are necessary. Your mere presence will touch hearts.”

Reflecting on this quote further, I find the significance of the words to be absolutely true. Comparing it with the logic of the commercial market that entices its traders to use verbosity to convince someone to seal a sale reveals a stark difference in strategy. Jesus at prayer is itself an astounding presence to the disciples because when He posed to them a question about who the crowds thought He was,  they responded with a consensus that He exuded a prophetic and messianic presence.

Obviously, if our actions do not match what we say, it is tough to convince even one in the crowd. Our kind gestures will be enough to say – I am no more superior than you are. Being present quietly to someone in grief is more effective than trying to comfort them with words. Indeed, all that is needed is a shoulder to cry on and a listening ear. This is a challenge for many of us because we act as if we have two mouths and one ear. With words alone, love will fail. Our humble actions and quiet presence do speak louder to listening hearts.

Dear Lord, may our friendship with others reveal something of Your assuring presence.
