St Pius of Pietrelcina, Priest, pray for us

25th Week in Ordinary Time (B) : Monday 23rd September 2024

Prov 3:27-35; Ps 14:2-5
Lk 8:16-18 (Ps Wk I)

The book of Proverbs sets a clear practice to recognize the dues that rightly belong to others. It is a virtuous norm. “Do not withhold kindness from anyone to whom it is due, when it is in your power to grant it.” There is no procrastination “when you can give him what is owed right then.”(vv 27-28). This norm is well connected to the lesson of ‘The Parable of the Lamp’ which Jesus spoke about to highlight all the good deeds which we ought to perform and not hide from a litany of excuses.

For the second time, Jesus impressed upon His disciples “if you have ears, listen carefully”.(vv8,18). How is the word of the Lord affecting you today? Are you hiding its promptings? Spare time and be attentive to its message, savour it to elicit a creative response to the needy circumstances of the day. Attentive listening will create responses which are Christ-like and others-centred. Perhaps, the immediate thought would direct us to the hardworking poor and helpless migrants in our society who implore upon the charity of the rich.

The purpose of lighting the lamp is not to hide it but to let it shine forth for all (Lk.8:16). Our relationship with God reflects our treatment towards our fellow human beings. Ponder awhile, the luxury we have is at the patrimony of the poor.

Lord, help me to be attentive to the daily calls of listening to Your word and acting with virtuous conduct.
