Jesus exposed the “woes” of the scribes and Pharisees. In this instance, Jesus likens them to “whitewashed tombs”. He uses the term in reference to the tradition of whitewashing tombs, especially before the Passover, in order to prevent any form of contamination of the living by dead bodies. The scribes and Pharisees may appear “handsome” outwardly, because of the way they dress and act. However, the very essence of uncleanliness can be found inside them (in their hearts). By this Jesus speaks about the sin of hypocrisy – to seem righteous on the “outside” but to have a rotten interior.

Paul asks the believers in Thessalonica to imitate him and his companions, living orderly lives and to work for their livelihood so as not to be a burden to others. Although Paul can exercise his right as an Apostle, a good example is more apostolic. Paul explains that he is doing this not merely to appear righteous or good, but out of obedience to the rule that he himself had laid down “in the Lord Jesus”. According to this rule, no one should eat who has not worked. Paul highlighted this rule because some people in the community had stopped working completely, deceived that the Lord Jesus would be returning soon. They may have appeared “righteous” but in reality, have become a nuisance, disturbing others and standing in the way. Work, says Paul, keeps us active and useful to others.

Lord, help me not to be caught up with external appearances.
