Lord, grant me a strong faith – for our eyes, minds, and hearts to see the things of God

21st Week in Ordinary Time (B) : Sunday 25th August 2024

Josh 24:1-2, 15-18; Ps 33:2-3, 16-23;
Eph 5:21-32; Jn 6:60-69 (Ps Wk I)

We make choices each day, some large and others small. But they are important because they signal whom and what we are serving. Some choose to serve God or to serve what is good, while many serve themselves, giving in to pride, ego, and greed. As they prepared to enter the Promised Land, Joshua told the people that they must choose whom they would serve – the God who liberated and cared for them, or the many strange gods that they would encounter. If they served God, all would be well. But if they served other gods, they would be on their own and it would not go well. Let us choose wisely each day whom and what we will serve.

Jesus had insisted that His followers eat His body and drink His blood to have eternal life. Difficult words indeed! Many walked away in disgust. Jesus asked His closest followers if they were going to leave too. Peter spoke for them and hopefully for us: ‘To whom shall we go Lord? You have the words of eternal life.’ He didn’t fully understand. Perhaps the Cana wedding   experience with Jesus tells him more would be revealed, and he would come to know and comprehend all. We may feel discouraged and disillusioned at times and be tempted to give up. But perseverance and faith are crucial – for our eyes, minds, and hearts to see the things of God.

Lord, help me to be steadfast in my faith and my spiritual journey.
