21st Week in Ordinary Times : Saturday, 29th August 2026

The Gospel recounts the events that led to the death of John the Baptist, and in it we see a prefiguration of the later death of Jesus Who, like John, was handed over to death.

In the first reading, we also see another prefiguration – this time to John in the person of the prophet Jeremiah. Just like John, Jeremiah stands up to proclaim the commandments of God; to confront the rulers and people who are greedy and corrupt. However, both are given the assurance that God is with them, strengthening them in their courage, and ultimately, it is God Who will deliver them.

How do I feel about these figures of bravery? In a world torn by strife and jealousy, where humans tend to strive after self-centredness and greed, where are the champions of justice, right and peace? Am I one of them? Am I fearful to speak out in situations that are not just and right? Jesus, John and Jeremiah were not afraid to confront them. Most certainly they had the courage to do so from God. It is time for me to ask and beg the Lord our God for the grace to speak out when and where there is injustice and inequity. In doing so, I am carrying out the Will of God. Nothing is easy and comfortable, but with the righteous God by my side, I can do it.

PRAYER Lord God, I beg You for the courage to do Your will.
