17th Week in Ordinary Times : Monday, 27th July 2026

Today Jesus offers two simple yet profound parables of the Kingdom of Heaven: a mustard seed and leaven. The mustard seed is among the smallest of seeds, measuring 1 to 2 mm. Yet, once planted, it grows into something far greater than expected – a tree large enough to shelter the birds of the air. The Kingdom of Heaven often begins insignificantly: a small act of kindness, a moment of faith, a quiet decision to trust. Yet in God’s eyes, these small beginnings unfold into something life-giving and expansive.

The second parable, leaven or yeast, works differently. It is hidden, mixed within the dough, unseen and silent. We then wait slowly and patiently for it to ferment the whole dough. The Kingdom is not always dramatic or visible; more often, it works from within us by shaping our hearts, renewing our minds, and gently transforming communities gradually.

Both parables invite us to trust in God’s way of working. We are often tempted to look for immediate answers to our prayers or visible success in our lives and careers. But Jesus points instead to the hidden, the small and the gradual. The Kingdom of Heaven grows where faith is planted, and it spreads where love is abundant, even when we cannot see it.

In our own lives, we may feel that what we offer is too little to matter. Yet nothing given to God is ever insignificant. In His time, and in His way, even the smallest seed becomes a source of life, and the hidden leaven transforms the whole.
