God is the only one we fear and in God we entrust and surrender our lives

12th Week in Ordinary Times : Sunday, 21st June 2026

Jer 20:10-13; Ps 68 (69):8-10, 14, 17, 33-35; Rom 5:12-15; Mt 10:26-33 (Ps Wk IV)

What do we fear most as a human being? Ultimately, is it not the fear of the loss of our life? Inherent in our human nature is the fight for survival and to value life.

In the Gospel reading today, Jesus dispels this fear as He assures His disciples not to be afraid of those who kill the body but fear the One who can destroy both body and soul in hell. This is an invitation for Christians to change our fundamental fear – from that of losing our mortal life to the fear of loss of our immortal soul. This shift in our thinking is not premised on human logic but faith in God Who is our Creator.

But it stands to logic too that He Who created us can also destroy us. Except that God is love and from the beginning of our existence, has a specific life plan and mission for each of His creatures whether human, animal or plant. The God Who made us in His image will see to it that even if we lose our earthly lives tragically, we will never lose our soul if we live for God.

What we fear most should not be the loss of our life, but the loss of our friendship with the God Who ultimately only wants us to be happy. Let us change our fundamental fear today – God is the only one we fear and in God we entrust and surrender our lives.

PRAYER:   O God, I trust in You.
