Lord, open my eyes to Your presence

34th Week in Ordinary Time : Friday 1st December 2023

Dan. 7:2-14; (R. Ps.) Dan. 3:75,76,77,78,
79,80,81; Lk. 21;29-33 (Ps. Wk. III)

Sometimes, the evil and negativity in our world seem overwhelming and unstoppable. Many feel helpless in the face of so much darkness. But Daniel’s vision tells another story from a time of great darkness. The beast and all the monsters in his vision are subdued and put to death, and the Son of Man figure has absolute dominion over the earth.

We see this as representing Jesus Christ, who exercises universal dominion. We should not be afraid or surrender to despair – the Lord is in charge of our world. When will it come? The fig tree parable teaches us to observe carefully and with the eyes of the Spirit. Wherever we see hope, justice, compassion, generosity, new life, forgiveness, and faith, we sense the presence and activity of the Lord. Everything else will pass away, but the Word of God will endure forever. We need not fear; God is alive and well and is at work worldwide. Let us be people of faith, hope, and love – this is the best response to the world’s darkness.

Lord, open my eyes to Your presence.
