Lord Jesus, increase my faith in you

4th Week of Lent : Thursday 23rd March 2023

Ex. 32:7-14; Ps. 105:19-23;
Jn. 5:31-47 (Ps. Wk. IV)

Today’s readings are all about reminding and testimony. When the Lord God is enraged by the Israelite’s worship of a molten calf, Moses reminds God of his promises to the patriarchs, and “the Lord relented in the punishment he had threatened to inflict upon his people.” The Psalmist recalls that incident and others to remind his fellow Israelites to recall the Lord’’s care for them (Ps. 105).

All of this testimony talk reminds us that our faith life is about responding to testimony—what we see and hear about faith-filled people acting and doing in the world around us.

We gain a direction in life through reason and science, but more often, through the influence and testimony of others through their words, attitudes and personal qualities. We find these people in daily life and the Church.

In today’s Gospel text, Jesus speaks of the testimonies that accredit him as the one sent by the Father: John the Baptist points Him out as the Saviour in His words and actions and the words of the Scriptures that refer to him.

Lord Jesus, I pray for a deeper faith to believe that God has sent You to us. Help me recognise You in the instructions You give through the Spirit in the Scriptures and through the people who live the Spirit. Amen.

May the Triune God be blessed!
