5th Week in Easter : Thursday, 7th May 2026

In the first reading, we see that the early Christian community encountered a lot of challenges trying to live out the teachings of Jesus. Internal conflicts between the Jewish and Gentile converts came up, such as whether the Gentile converts needed to be circumcised, and to follow the ritual obligations of the Jews, such as those involving unclean foods and food sacrificed to idols.

The Jerusalem Council, in Acts 15:7-21 under the leadership of Peter, Paul and Barnabas, demonstrates how the early Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, apply the Law of Christ based on love, and resolve theological disputes by affirming that salvation comes through grace, not the Law, uniting Jews and Gentiles by faith in Christ and God’s unconditional and inclusive love.

Using the metaphor of the vine, Chapter 15 of John’s Gospel begins with Jesus identifying Himself as the vine in relation to His Father, the vinedresser. The love of God the Father and His Son is a creative, life-giving love that enables the Son to live in union with the Father in total obedience to His holy Will. Jesus uses the same metaphor to illustrate our relationship with Him as branches attached to the vine to obtain nutrients for growth and to bear fruit. The hallmark of being a disciple of Jesus is to remain in His love, as Jesus remains in His Father’s love. Following in the footsteps of Christ, we will experience deep joy and the peace of God in loving service to one another.
