Lord, help me always to be ready to receive You

1st Sunday of Advent (A) : Sunday 27th November 2022

Is. 2:1-5; Ps. 121:1-2,4-5,6-9;
Rom. 13:11-14; Mt. 24:37-44 (Ps. Wk I)

Isaiah’s vision of a transformed world of peace, prosperity and happiness has inspired humankind for over two thousand years. It’s a world where weapons have been changed to peaceful uses, and people no longer train for war. Humanity lives in harmony with nature, and compassionate justice reigns supreme. It hasn’t happened yet, but this is God’s hope and wish for us. Only we can bring it about by opening our minds and hearts to the divine will.

The night is far gone; the day of the Lord is near. Put on the armour of light. These words converted           St. Augustine so long ago and are still words of power today. Putting on the armour of light and putting away the deeds of darkness is the key to a happy earthly life and an infinitely happy eternal life. We do not know when the Lord will return.

Many think that the day of reckoning will never come, as in the days of Noah. But come it will. The Gospel says that it will be sudden and unexpected, so we should always be ready. Each day is the day of the Lord’s coming if we are prepared to receive Him.

Lord, may I always be ready to receive You.
