Lord, help me to follow you completely and whole-heartedly
22nd Week in Ordinary Time (B) : Thursday 2nd September 2021
Col. 1:9-14; Ps. 97:2-4,5-6;
Lk. 5:1-11 (Ps Wk II)
Even as the crowd pressed around him, Jesus was able to comprehend the dire situation faced by Simon Peter and his fellow fishermen. These men did not get a good catch of fish. Sensing the opportunity to get Simon and the others to respond more readily and entirely to the call to become his disciples, Jesus steps into Simon’s boat and, from there, teaches the crowd.
As they busied themselves with washing the nets close to the boat, they also listened as Jesus preached to the people. His words would have had an impact on them and helped them to realise that Jesus is truly a gifted teacher of God’s Word. Later when Jesus asked Simon to go fishing again, he was reluctant to do so. His response to Jesus was “…but if you say so, I will pay out the nets.” Little did Simon realise that Jesus’ request to “put out into deep water…” would have a deeper meaning for him.
What happens next is well known. A large number of fish is caught, and indeed, a miracle has taken place. Simon now became aware that Jesus is more than just a teacher. He also realised that Jesus has something more to offer to him in life. When Jesus extends the invitation for them to become a “fisher of men”, Peter, James and John leave everything to be his disciples. Their awareness of the person of Jesus has “deepened” from teacher to miracle worker and now, Master. They are ready to follow Jesus completely.
Lord, help me accept You as my Master.
