Lord, increase my love for You

6th Week in Ordinary Time : Monday 17th February 2020

James 1:1-11; Ps. 119(118):67-68,71-72, 75-76; Mk. 8:11-13 (Ps Wk II)

What do you need most in life at this moment: peace, wisdom, healing, affirmation? The letter of James encourages us to ask God for what we need or desire. “If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you” (James 1:5).

When we ask God, we are to pray with faith, trusting that the Lord will bless us (1:6). Yet, patience is often necessary. If we do not receive the gift right away, we are not to be afraid. Such trials test our faith and teach us endurance. Endurance, in turn, leads to a more mature faith (1:4).

Perhaps a piece of straightforward advice to give, but difficult to live out. James knew that the early Christians were facing poverty, injustice and pressure to give up the faith. They were suffering.

So James decided to write frankly. He wanted them to know their faith will bear fruit. They are not alone. Jesus will stand with them amid their suffering. There is hope: Jesus has promised the crown of eternal life to those who love him (1:12).

Am I facing a trial? What do I need most?

Lord, please increase my love for You. Bless me with what I need today. I ask with deep faith in You.
