Lord, help me draw close to You daily

5th Week in Ordinary Time : Wednesday 12th February 2020

1 Kgs 10:1-10; Ps. 37(36): 5-6. 30-31,39-40;
Mk 7:14-23 (Ps Wk I)

The keyword in today’s readings is “wisdom”. It refers not just to any wisdom but the wisdom that comes from God. Solomon is described as having such knowledge. His understanding is so well known that even the Queen of Sheba comes to Jerusalem to test for herself whether Solomon is a man of wisdom. Eventually, she admits that the fame for his knowledge is richly deserved. Not only is Solomon’s wisdom demonstrated by the fact that he was able to answer all her questions aptly, but also through his lifestyle, the way he manages his kingdom and his officials, and the sacrifices he offers in the temple.

In the Gospel, Jesus demonstrates his wisdom. With his knowledge, he challenges the Pharisees about their “lip service” interpretations of the law of God. Jesus states that it is not what goes into a person from outside that makes him or her unclean. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that does so. In other words, it is one’s actions, inspired from within that shows whether a person is living or not living according to the commandments of God.

It is the hope of the Gospel writer, Mark that his readers will look at the different ways in which they are responding through their lives to God from “within”, that is, with their whole being and not merely by “lip service”. From this, it is clear that only when we have a living relationship with God and are obedient to His law, can we grow in true wisdom.

Lord, help me draw close to You daily.
