St Dominic, priest

18th Week in Ordinary Time : Saturday 8th August 2020

Hab 1:12--2:4; Ps. 9:8-9,10-11,12-13;
Mt. 17:14-20 (Ps Wk II)

Habakkuk’s questions for God challenge us in every age of history, such as the present age of the coronavirus. From an early age, we human beings are driven by our spirit to ask “why?” Listen to young children learning to talk and marvel at how early on in their development, the question “Why?” arises.

Many of our “why?” questions touch upon the mysteries of human existence and the mystery of God. He creates us and providentially guides us and creation.

Today’s Gospel passage from Matthew, provides, not an answer to every “Why?” question: rather, Jesus answers the disciples with a call to faith: “If your faith were the size of a mustard seed… nothing would be impossible for you”.

This is an extraordinarily encouraging and enabling promise. Nothing is impossible for God (Lk 1:37). Thus, even faith as tiny as a mustard seed will make us more like God and therefore capable of facing every challenge in life.

Lord God, grant us the faith and wisdom we need to face and overcome every crisis which threatens us.
