Lord, I am not worthy... grant me the grace to serve others out of love for you

12th week in Ordinary Time (B) : Saturday 26th June 2021

Gen. 18:1-15; (R. Ps.) Lk. 1:46-47,48-49,50,53,54-55;
Mt. 8:5-17 (Ps Wk IV)

The centurion was an officer of the Roman Imperial army, a man with power and status. He came to Jesus and begged him to cure his servant, who was lying at home, paralysed. Jesus was ready to go to cure him, but the centurion declared himself unworthy even to entertain Jesus in his house. He believed that Jesus only needed to give a command, and his servant would be healed. In this manner, the centurion effectively put himself under the authority of Jesus.

“Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed.” (Mt. 8:8).

Jesus was amazed that the faith of this Roman surpassed all those in Israel who regarded themselves as God’s chosen people. Jesus must be impressed as well by the centurion’s humility and love for a fellow human being that he cut through all the barriers of rank and race to seek help from him.

“Go; let it be done for you according to your faith.”

Lord, give me the grace to listen to my heart; help me to cut through the social conventions and barriers to reach out to those who are in need.  Amen.
