St Paul VI, Pope;
SS Cosmas and Damian, martyrs

26th Sunday in Ordinary Time (C) : Monday 26th September 2022

Job. 1:6-22; Ps. 16:1,2-3,6-7;
Lk. 9:46-50 (Ps Wk II)

I always admired Job in his encounters with misfortune, especially when they struck him one after another; he still uttered his total trust in God, “The Lord gave, the Lord has taken back.” And at the same time, Job did not commit any sin nor offer any insult to God. From what we read in today’s First Reading, it is as if Job had such a strong will and disposition against any kind of challenge that came his way.

Possibly Job took on a child’s attitude, as mentioned by Jesus in the Gospel passage. A child submits and accepts things, come what may. A child does not think of himself/herself as marvellous and therefore can do many things.

It is time for us to take on the disposition of a child when we experience difficulties and challenges in our lives. Do not let the worries and anxieties that come with them burden us with unnecessary weight. Can we say with Job, “The Lord gave, the Lord has taken back”?

We are consoled by the words of the psalmist today. God hears and listens to our prayers. We trust and have faith in our God despite what we go through each day. Do we have the confidence to accept that the Lord is in charge?

Lord, I put my trust in You. Help my unbelief!
