Mt. 16:24-28 (Ps Wk II)

Today’s Gospel reading reminds us of the ‘Cost of Discipleship’. From this text, we can draw the following details and how they apply to us in today’s context.

God calls us to be selfless like Jesus and to be prepared to shoulder the crosses in our lives. (v 24), We are called to surrender our life to God like Jesus, and with the promise of attaining the fullness of life, we work towards this goal. (v25).

We must discern in making choices between success as world values promote it in contrast to spiritual renewal and grace-filled decisions. (v.26). To attain eternal happiness as the reward for the kind deeds done to alleviate the suffering of the poor, the marginalised, the exploited and the rejected in society. (v.27).

With the experiences of the Resurrection of Jesus in our lives, we manifest Jesus’ love and deeds that will bring God the Father/Jesus/Holy Spirit to those who yearn for relief from pain and suffering. (v.28).

The acts of “sanctifying and giving of one’s life for the Kingdom of God” are at the heart of the Gospel. This is re-iterated in today’s Gospel acclamation: “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.” (Mt 5:10).

‘Lord, grant us the grace to embrace the cost of  discipleship with Jesus in our mind, heart and actions.’
