St Teresa of Jesus

28th Week in Ordinary Time : Tuesday 15th October 2019

Rom. 1:16-25; Ps. 19(18):2-3,4-5;
Lk. 11:37-41 (Ps Wk IV)

Paul was uncompromising. He insisted that no one could claim that they didn’t know God or the difference between right and wrong. God was plainly evident in creation, if only we see with the eyes of the heart and mind. We all have God’s law written in our hearts — it is our birthright, since we are all created in the image and likeness of God. Unfortunately, we get distracted by many things and put them between ourselves and God.

Jesus criticized the Pharisees for using their faith for lording it over others. But the Pharisees were no worse than others — this is a human weakness common to all religions. Jesus would make similar criticisms within our Church today, just as Pope Francis has. Our faith is not about titles, wealth, marks of respect, or a life of comfort. Leadership is only to serve others and to seek the common good, not to inflate egos. His biggest criticism was reserved for those who heaped rules and burdens on others but would do nothing to help them or ease their burden. God does not delight in obstacles, barriers, and burdens that hinder people in their spiritual journey. We are all in this together; one of the greatest things we can do is offer encouragement and support to others who are struggling. We are all equal in God’s house.

Lord, help me to encourage and support others.
