Daily Word Of God

John 8:31-36

To the Jews who believed in him Jesus said: ‘If you make my word your home you will indeed be my disciples; you will come to know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’

They answered, ‘We are descended from Abraham and we have never been the slaves of anyone; what do you mean, “You will be set free?” ’

Jesus replied: ‘In all truth I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave. Now a slave has no permanent standing in the household, but a son belongs to it for ever. So if the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In today’s Gospel, Jesus assures His followers that His Truth will “set us free”.  Free to live in peace, harmony and joy.

  • Is there such reality in this world of pain and suffering? Yes, we may not be physically and emotionally at peace because we are ill or upset at a friend’s betrayal, but we can still find strength and peace in the Lord.

  • Clearly, there are no two ways of living our lives: we either choose God’s ways and find peace and fulfilment or choose the secular and evil ways of self-centredness and pride of the world and find life to be miserable.
